      Ruxley Apiary

Ruxley Apiary is the ’home’ teaching apiary of the Sidcup branch of the Kent BeeKeepers Association (KBKA).
It is used for instruction in beekeeping, the practical aspects of the Ruxley Apiary beekeeping course, for queen rearing and sometimes for properly supervised experimentation.

Most of all, members of the Ruxley Apiary enjoy socialising, exchanging experiences, and spending in each other’s company at their weekly meetings.

It is open on most Saturdays from 2pm – 5pm. Excellent Teas and Cakes made by members are always served, and members of the general public are most welcome to witness our activities and even sample our hospitality.

The season starts early March, with an inspection for viability and health of each colony of bees.

In early April, swarming prevention and Varroa control measures are undertaken

Occasionally, The Mayor of Bexley and The President of KBKA visit to declare the Apiary open for the season

All beekeepers should aim to raise their own replacement queens every season. Grafting is seen here, but less skilful methods are demonstrated and used in the apiary as well

The easiest method of separating bees from their honey is by harmlessly blowing them out of the full honey boxes (called ’supers’).

A great deal more can be learned if you come along and observe and even help out if you would like to get involved.
